With the stigma attached to cosmetic surgery all but gone and no longer a luxury reserved for the very rich, a wide spectrum of society, including seniors, are undergoing cosmetic surgery procedures. The favored cosmetic surgery among seniors over the age of 65 has been eyelid surgery and botox procedures. This is a slight change from previous years when the most popular procedures for older patients were face lifts, eyelid lifts, brow lifts, neck lifts, skin treatments and nose surgery. The reasons seniors get cosmetic surgery vary. Since some seniors are working longer, many want to be seen in a positive manner by their peers. Like other groups who want to enhance their appearance, seniors in Atlanta want to look good as they age.

Cosmetic Surgery

Cosmetic Surgery is defined as a subspecialty of surgery that uniquely restricts itself to the enhancement of appearance through surgical and medical techniques. It is specifically concerned with maintaining normal appearance, restoring it, or enhancing it beyond the average level toward some aesthetic ideal. In 2006, nearly 11 million cosmetic surgeries were performed in the United States alone..

The stigma of having a procedure done is becoming almost nonexistent. More important seems to be the desire to "look" as young as you "feel".

Especially with cosmetic procedures, you want a surgeon who is a capable technician, as well as one who is "artistic" ~ both talents are extremely important. Of course, you want one who listens to your wants and concerns. If a surgeon is unwilling to take the time to answer your questions in detail, find one who will.

Cosmetic surgery requires educated decision-making. Before meeting with a particular surgeon, do plenty of research. The most complete source of research is found at medical libraries. Many hospitals have wonder medical libraries, complete with librarians who will pull the appropriate books for you. Use the Internet, but be aware that you may be on a site that may have a self-serving agenda. Use it as a guide. Check out the American Society of Plastic Surgeons. Write down your questions and concerns.

You need to know which doctors are the best candidates for each surgical procedure, their credentials, and see examples of their work. You need to consider the recovery time, the appropriate expectations for each procedure and whether it is better to have the procedure performed in the doctor's clinic or in a hospital setting, in case of complications. This is a case where price should not be your top concern. You will be wearing the results for the rest of your life. Make sure you feel comfortable with your choice on all levels.

Cosmetic surgery usually is not covered by insurance, unless associated with a medical procedure.
